Flash From the Past: Bob Mould’s Poison Years

I often have my iTunes set on random shuffle. With over 5000 songs in my library it is a great way to revisit music that I don’t have in heavy rotation. Of course, sometimes songs pop up that make you think, “what the hell was I thinking?!” or “When or why did I go through a Juice Newton phase?!” Other times a song pops back onto your radar like a visit from an old friend.

Tonight as Crouching Tiger and I were finishing dinner on popped one of the greatest songs in my library. Bob Mould’s Poison Years from his 1989 album Workbook. Pure magic.

I think this is one of my favorite Bob songs because it showcases his voice really well, shows off his musicianship, and most of all his uniqe ability to help popular music transcend the saccharine for something much deeper and introspective without getting too caught up in itself. I just hit repeat played it twice more. If you haven’t heard it, go to iTunes and give it a spin. It’s only 99ยข, bitches. Better yet, buy that whole album. Workbook is a great album.

I think part of its luster for me is that it is so representative of where I was back in 1989. Workbook was my introduction to the emerging “alternative” world of music. Such a simpler time. It was also a time when music played a really important part in the way I was beginning to understand the world. Thanks Bob for making music that makes us think deeper about the world and ourselves.

Poison Years is one of my favorites also. “Treason is the reason for my poison years” describes my 20’s so well.
